As we begin a new year, and a new decade, I reflect upon the accomplishments and the initiatives of the coming year. We have many exciting plans and I wanted to take a moment to tell you, our members, what is happening here at our Credit Union.

I joined Southern Mass Credit Union in August of 2017 and spent several months acclimating to the Credit Union, talking to members, getting to know the community, and examining the infrastructure that makes running a financial institution possible. During the summer of 2018, several senior managers were hired. These highly experienced professionals were necessary to rejuvenate our Credit Union and offer an all-encompassing array of products and services. This team is committed to ensuring outstanding service for our members, offering a variety of products and services, and supporting our local communities. The banking and credit union industry regulatory environment has changed drastically over the last few years. Our Credit Union needed experts in a variety of areas to update our policies and procedures accordingly. Within the first few months, we updated many of the Credit Union policies to bring them into compliance with state and federal requirements. We also expanded our mortgage lending products to help our members make the dream of home ownership a reality.

We want you to feel optimistic about our Credit Union and know that you have the right banking partner by your side. We want you to be confident that you have access to the tools and services you need to successfully manage your money. Please know that there is a team here researching new products and services so that you have the latest banking technologies available to you.

One of the initiatives we have planned in the next 12-24 months is to update our core system. This will be a necessary labor-intensive project. Our current core system vendor is no longer offering system upgrades which impacts our ability to grow our product mix and, potentially, the Credit Union. A new core system will allow us to offer several items that members have inquired about, including:

  • Debit Card program enhancements
  • Offering online account opening
  • Enhancing product offerings
  • Improving the digital and mobile experience

While we expand our product offerings and upgrade our technologies, we plan to remodel the Fairhaven office to outfit the Credit Union with the space it needs to accommodate member requests. We are going to change the flow of the branch area for a better member experience. We will also create additional workspaces as we bring on more staff to better serve our members.

As you can see, the last 2 years have been a whirlwind of activity and change at Southern Mass Credit Union - and we’re not done yet. We are committed to providing our members, and the community, with friendly service, diversified lending products, enhanced products and services, compliant policies and procedures, and a highly experienced, trust-inspiring team working behind the scenes to ensure your best banking experience.
